True cigarettes
True is a low-tar brand of cigarettes introduced by Lorillard Tobacco Company in April 1966. On or about June 30, 1972, Lorillard Tobacco Company published in "Life" magazine an advertisement which promoted its cigarette product "True". Said advertisement was disseminated throughout the State of Florida, and contained, in part, the written statement: "Latest U.S. Government tests of all leading cigarettes show True lowest in both tar and nicotine of the 20 best selling brands." True was the second major vented-filter cigarette that captured a significant market share (0.8 mg nicotine, 12.9 mg tar). The cigarette emitted nearly half the tar and nicotine of the best-selling filter cigarette, Winston. True cigarette was a very successful brand. In its third quarter of its first year (1966), True sold 0.48% share of the market. By 1968, True had a very successful 1.72% of the market. It caught the interest of the competing companies who appreciated that filter ventilation was needed to achieve very low standard yields. The success of True appears to have been critical to the popularization of filter ventilation. In 1976 Lorillard set out to position a brand in each segment of the low-tar market: 11-15 mg., 6-10 mg. and 5 or fewer mg. Lorillard reduced the tar level of True to 5 mg. from 11 mg.
